E-merge-R – Markus Hoffman
Kzoo Shad Streamer
Matt Erny of StreamersFlyFishing.com is at it again! I’ve seen Matt tie this fly and I know he has a lot of faith in it. He says it is his “go to” fly and for the last 3 years it has proven to be effective on trout, smallies, and largemouth.
Bivisible – Tightline Productions
Tightline Productions recent fly tying video is on the classic Bivisible. If you are interested, there is a darn good thread over on Sparse Grey Matter discussing the Bivisible and it’s history.
Cinnamon Parachute Ant
This is a nicely tied pattern by Arrick’s Fly Shop out of West Yellowstone, Montana.
Ants are hard to see, so tying them as a parachute pattern makes them easy to see. I tie this pattern in black, cinnamon/black, and cinnamon. The cinnamon color is especially effective when the honey colored flying ants are landing on the water. We see these starting in mid August. The cutthroats in the northeast corner of Yellowstone park like this fly.
Patriot Dry Fly – tying video
InTheRiffle does another great job explaining how to tie a specific pattern and this time it’s Charles Meck’s Patriot. I know many who still use this pattern. So pay attention and tie some for your box!
The recipe I’m posting is from Charles Meck. (InTheRiffle shows how to tie it correctly, I wanted to list the original materials.
Patriot
Hook: size 12 to 18, Mustad 94833
Thread: Bright orange red fluorescent 6/0
Tail: Brown hackle fibers
Body: Five strands of smolt blue Krystal Flash with a midrib of the tying thread in the middle of the shank Wings: White calf hair, divided
Hackle: Brown
NOTE: It is important to note the Patriot should be tied with Smolt Blue Krystal Flash. Smolt Blue is a light,
almost translucent blue that possesses a reflective iridescence, almost
purplish when wound over the red thread.
Spent Caddis
The Spent Caddis is an A.K. Best pattern and he shows us just how he does it in the video below. Just for fun and to add to the presentation, I have included a video by Hans Weilenmann tying the Spent Caddis. By the way, I saw A.K. in person at the Midwest Fly Tying Expo about a year ago. I love the way he describes things, he cracks me up.
Visit Hans’ website here.
Tying a Detached Body Mayfly Emerger by mak-flies
This is a nice looking pattern by mak-flies. With emergers coming soon, I thought this fit perfectly.

Rubber Leg Copper John
Hammer Creek Fly Fishing ties a very nice Rubber Leg Copper John. Check it out!
Dave Whitlock on Fly Tying The Angler’s Art
Fly Tying The Angler’s Art was a fly tying show on PBS years ago and in this episode they have the legend, Dave Whitlock, as their guest. He ties Whitlock’s Sheep Minnow Streamer. Also on this episode, Leroy Hyatt ties the Burlap, a steelhead fly and the Carey Special. I mentioned Leroy Hyatt in an older post here on FrankenFly.
Bise’s B Bug
It’s been awhile since I posted a bug by Dustin Bise, but here here is in Big R Fly Shop’s latest video. This is a nice buggy pattern and I like the way it floats.
It is a skwala pattern Dustin calls Bise’s B Bug. This is an early season attractor stonefly that is a hybrid of Pat’s Rubber Legs and Chubby Chernobyl. It rides low in the water and is a good fly choice for selective fish.
Catskill-Style Hendrickson – Tightline Productions
Pregnant Scud
This video is from Twigg and Barry FlyFishing Outfitters of Vanvouver, British Columbia.
20% of a trout’s diet in still waters, at any time of the year, will be made up by scud (freshwater shrimp).
This pattern takes a few key features that trout key in on including the use of an orange bead to represent eggs. Pearl UV dubbing is integrated for extra flash and visibility.
Trout will also key in on scuds that have been infected with an intestinal parasite, turning their intestine bright orange. This makes them stand out against their surrounds and an easy meal, and is represented here by a strip of orange poly pro.
We’ve tied this on a Mustad C49s which has a bend but also results in a relatively straight fly, which is important as scuds are relatively straight when swimming, and are curved at rest.
Tie them in colours and sizes to suit your local conditions, fish them on a floating line with a long leader or a clear intermediate line.
